Buck Island National Monument Photos
Buck Island Reef National Monument is truly a jewel in the U. S. National Park System and a must see trip for any visitor to St. Croix. The island itself is six thousand feet long and 1/2 mile wide, the National Monument includes 176 acres of land and 704 of water and coral reef system. In fact, two-thirds of the island is surrounded by an elkhorn coral barrier reef. First protected in 1948, proclaimed a national monument in 1961, Buck Island is a 5.5 mile sail from Christiansted and is uninhabited except by sea turtles and brown pelicans. Endangered species nesting here include hawksbill, leatherback and green turtles. Turtle Beach, white and sandy, was named one of the ten best Caribbean beaches by National Geographic.
