Why Vacation on St. Croix? Virtual Island Tour Stop #5 St. Croix “hook”
Local Sonya Hough is the undisputed creator of the St. Croix hook bracelet, a simple yet elegant combination of silver and gold you will find no where else. Yes, others have copied her, and the concept has even spread to other Caribbean islands, but the original can only be found at Sonya’s Ltd. on Company Street in Christiansted or through Sonya’s website. The hook caught on partly because of the lore that developed around it – wear the hook up or down depending on your luck or love – in meant your heart was taken, out meant you were looking. Even today people all over the world will spot the bracelet and ask you about your connection to St. Croix. And 40 years later Sonya is still in Christiansted, designing and selling jewelry with her family.
Of course, Sonya’s isn’t the only reason to visit St. Croix and do some shopping. Roaming the streets of either Christiansted or Frederiksted, with their unique stores and historical Danish architecture and cobbled streets is just plain FUN! There are plenty of great restaurants open for lunch in either town if the shopping makes you hungry and all St. Croix purchases are duty-free.
For a list of current stores and their locations, check out the shopping page on our website and then come to St. Croix and get your own hook bracelet.
