On our way to scuba dive "The Wall" at Salt River Canyon

Over the past several years I have heard and read more than one statement that “St. Croix is one of the most under-rated scuba diving destinations in the Caribbean” and a great part of the reason for that is our exquisite 7 mile long submarine canyon that runs along the North Shore of the island.  This canyon, locally known simply as “The Wall”, is a worldwide geologic rarity.  Descending thousands of feet down from the surface it is teeming with different types of corals, caves, and marine life.  There are few places that can offer the experience of “wall diving” for all levels of divers; St. Croix is one of them!

The two most well-known wall diving areas on St. Croix are Salt River Bay (in Villa Soleil’s backyard; forming part of the Salt River Bay National Historic Park and Ecological Preserve) and Cane Bay. The dive sites known as Salt River East and Salt River West are separated by a chasm that is thousands of feet in depth but starts in only 20 feet of water, so it can be appreciated by both the novice and experienced diver.  The wall at Cane Bay can be reached directly from the beach, no boat trip required.  Just don your scuba gear and swim about 50 yards off-shore.

Under-rated?  I’m not experienced enough myself to gauge, so I’ll have to take others word for it.  But it was love at first dive for me and the black corals!

In addition to wall diving, St. Croix has a smorgasbord of different dive sites.  Or watch our St. Croix Scuba video.
