St. Croix Sunset Sail on the Jolly Mon

It never fails that we leave St. Croix with undone check marks next to things we wanted to do.  There are just so many interesting vacation activities on the island that it is impossible to do them all!

This past trip we had a lovely invitation from Miles to join him and his crew on the Jolly Mon for a sunset sail.  Compared to snorkeling, sunning, eating or scuba diving, this had always been one of the minor ideas on my to-do list but Miles was persistent and my husband and parents-in-law were all for it.  So I dutifully put on my motion sickness reducing Seabands and gave it a go.  IT WAS SPECTACULAR!  It is now on my list of “must-do’s” for guests.

First, the captain and crew are friendly, jovial, welcoming, and knowledgeable (Miles grew up here and has been sailing these waters all his life.)  Second, they are generous with the free food and rum punch provided if you go in for that sort of thing (rum and motion sickness don’t usually mix well).  Third, being out on the water and experiencing the always colorful and magnificent setting of the sun over the Caribbean waters and the island was just plain joyful.  Then heading back to Christiansted, whose lights were blinking a warm glow in the ever deepening dusk, as I listened to the waves lapping against the boat and viewed the moon above the full sail was an unforgettable experience.  I had forgotten how much sailing can replenish the soul.
